How to Fix Skype Audio Not Working on Windows 10

Working from home is the norm these days. Companies and organizations around the world are turning to collaborative tools such as Skype, Zoom, Google Meet, and WebEx to get things done and make digital meetings and conferences. While on a call, you might face audio from your side, or not function as expected. The problem was found in the Windows 10 Skype application.

This problem can arise because of many factors, including audio drivers, Windows audio, application settings, or because of recent train updates. In this post, we will talk about all possible solutions to fix Skype audio not working on Windows 10. Let’s get started. Follow step by step and get ready to work again on Skype.

Check Audio Settings from the Skype Application

Microsoft has added a good option in the application to check Skype audio and video. From the Skype application, you can tap the three dot button at the top and open the settings menu.

From the Settings menu, open the audio & video section and activate the microphone settings automatically. Keep the speaker volume at the bar high. You can also test audio using the options mentioned. Skype allows you to make free test calls too.

If you are still experiencing problems with the audio test, then let’s move to the following options to fix it.

Restart Windows Audio Services

Microsoft allows you to restart Windows audio services. If there is an error with the Windows audio service, then the possibility of Skype audio calls might be affected by Windows problems. The good news is, there is an easy fix for that. Follow the steps below to restart the Windows audio service.

Step 1: Right-click the Windows button in the bottom bar.

Step 2: Select Run, and that will open the Run dialog box.

Step 3: In the Run command box, type services.msc and click the OK button

Step 4: This will open the service menu. Now, look for the Windows Audio option in it.

Step 5: Right-click on it and select the Start option (If the service doesn’t work) or tap the Restart or Continue button (If it already works).

Step 6: After the process is complete, restart the computer and check whether Skype audio is functioning or not.

Allow Skype to Control Voice

Windows allows third party applications to control system sound / audio standards. This is activated by default. But, if the option is somehow turned off, it’s time to check it and make sure it is active. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Right-click on the speaker icon on the desktop bar.

Step 2: Click on Sound and go to Recordings from the following menu.

Step 3: Double-click on the default Microphone Array.

Step 4: This will open the Microphone Array property. Now, Open the Advanced menu.

Step 5: In Exclusive mode, the switch-on allows the application to take exclusive control of this device.

Step 6: Select Apply, press ok. Now check whether Skype audio has started functioning or not.

Reinstall Audio Driver

Skype Audio Problems can be caused by outdated or corrupt audio drivers in Windows 10. You can delete and install them again to fix the problem.

Right-click on the Windows key and open the device manager. Here, you will see all the important drivers for a Windows 10 PC. Open Sound, Video, and game controller and right-click on it.

Uninstall the driver and restart the computer, and the system will install the driver again. Now, you can open Skype to check audio.

Change the Default Audio Device

This one is useful for those who use multiple speakers that are set on a Windows PC. You need to change the default audio for Windows 10 Operating System.

Step 1: From the desktop bar, right-click on the speaker icon and the incoming sound.

Step 2: From the menu, open playback options.

Step 3: Here, you will find a list of third-party loudspeaker accessories currently connected to your Windows PC.

Step 4: Double-click on the relevant option and set it as default.

Check the Strength of the Internet Connection

If your internet connection is slow in your home, you might face interrupted audio with Skype calls. Skype lowers the audio experience every time it detects a slow internet connection to keep calls running.

You might want to check the internet using speed services like or Speedtest. You might want to consider switching to a cable connection for a better experience.

Close Browser Tabs and Other Applications

In some situations, tabs that are opened or third-party applications can use the Audio function on the device. In such cases, Skype audio will not work for you. You should consider closing irrelevant tabs in the browser and closing applications on Windows 10 devices.

It’s Time to Make Skype Calls
